ANPR Cameras Are Not Infallible
Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras are used by most private parking operators and increasingly by councils. While the technology has improved, ANPR cameras make errors regularly. If you believe the camera got it wrong, you have strong grounds for appeal.
Common ANPR Errors
- Misread plates: Characters like O/0, I/1, B/8, and S/5 are frequently confused. Dirty, damaged, or non-standard plates increase error rates.
- Wrong vehicle captured: The camera may have photographed the wrong vehicle entirely, especially in busy car parks.
- Timing errors: Entry or exit timestamps may be incorrect due to system glitches, clock drift, or daylight saving time changes.
- Multiple visits merged: If you visited twice in one day, the system may record your first entry and last exit as a single overstay.
- Cloned plates: Rarely, your plate may match a cloned vehicle. If you can prove you weren't at the location, this is a complete defence.
How to Challenge ANPR Evidence
Request the ANPR images from the operator — you have a right to see them. Check whether the images clearly show your vehicle and whether the timestamps match your actual visit. Compare with your own evidence: dashcam footage, receipts from shops, or mobile phone location data.
Making Your Appeal
State specifically what error you believe occurred and provide supporting evidence. If the ANPR images are unclear or the timestamps don't match your evidence, the operator's case is significantly weakened.
